ABSTRACT:
Nature heals. Just looking at nature’s beauty has been proven to relieve stress and tension, as opposed to regular TV, which increases it. In this compelling short essay, Nature Relaxation founder David Huting discusses the importance of combatting stress & dis-ease with the combined powers of nature & relaxation, and introduces what he's created to make both more accessible to you.
Stress In Our Modern World
Let's face it: regular life in our modern day and age can be mentally taxing and downright overwhelming; important decision making, constant deadlines and distractions causes our cortisol levels to rise, which if not diffused regularly can wreak havoc on your mind and body. To quote the prestigious medical institution (and Nature Relaxation client) Mayo Clinic:
“It is extremely important to learn healthy ways to cope with the stressors in your life. The long-term activation of the stress-response system — and the subsequent overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones — can disrupt almost all your body's processes. This puts you at increased risk of numerous health problems, including:
-
Anxiety & Addiction
-
Depression
-
Digestive problems
-
Headaches
-
Heart disease
-
Sleep/sexual problems
-
Weight gain
-
Memory and concentration impairment” (source)
Using Nature As A Therapy
It is implied knowledge that beautiful Nature scenes help quiet the busy mind, and therefore reduce stress. For example, a beautiful sunset is something we all would associate with relaxation – it just happens automatically; no effort required. Look at this scene and try it for yourself:
In fact, numerous studies have proven that viewing Nature reestablishes mental clarity and calm like food and water nourishes bodies. As it turns out, just being in an environment with Nature- whether real or simulated on a screen - allows the brain to function optimally, as opposed to non-natural environments which causes the brain to have to work harder. Just like your iPhone needs to plug in to sync, so to do you need to sync with Nature regularly to keep your brain charged.
More and more, individuals and organizations are beginning to under the power and importance of both Nature and Relaxation. Viewing Nature puts us in an awe-tomatic mode, instead of automatic mode – and therein lies a world of difference in the quality of our lives and the lives of those around us. When we’re in awe, we are more apt to notice & appreciate the little things- things like the smile of a small child, or the glistening of the morning dew on your walk to work – in short, when we are around Nature our minds are more relaxed; we’re more mentally present and aware. More mindful.
When we’re in automatic mode, however, we can miss those awe-some little moments. Whether at work or school, it’s very easy to get caught up in our thoughts and worries, thus reducing our present awareness. We’ve all been there. On top of missing the little things, being less mindful opens up a whole new can of worms: we can become irritable, depressed, mentally drained and therefore more at risk of accidents and making poor decisions in our work and personal lives. Yet we can defend ourself from all of these stresses and diseases with Nature, and relaxation – the immortal slayers of stress.
Could it just be that in our rush for success we have simply failed to understand the great powers innate in both? In this world of cubicle-induced cognitive dissonance, it only makes sense that we must look to our roots in Nature (no pun intended) for answers. But the reality is we won't make the time or effort until we really understand why and how Nature heals us.
While I will illustrate the findings in one of my next articles, the good news is that we can easily utilize our manmade distractions – our phones, tablets, computers and TVs - to replace worries with wonders and reconnect with Nature daily, with Nature Relaxation™ Videos.
